IPFW Mastodons Hockey Club

By admin | April 28, 2009

Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne (IPFW) Mastodon Hockey Club is a college club team that competes in the American Collegiate Hockey League (ACHA). There are three levels of men’s and one level of women’s hockey within the ACHA. DI, DII, and DIII comprise men’s hockey.

IPFW competes at the DII level because of our school’s enrollment and the level of competition. We may also have a DIII team, if we have enough players. The DII level consists of 112 teams this year across the country. These 112 teams are divided into four regions; northeast, central, southeast, and west. Within the ACHA are also individual leagues of teams as well as independent teams. We will compete in the Southeast division of DII. We will also belong to a new league this year called the “Tri State Collegiate Hockey League.” The TSCHL will comprise of the following teams; IPFW, the University of Toledo, Bowling Green University, Purdue University, Ohio State University, and the University of Kentucky. We may have additional teams joining, but at the present, we have six teams. We will play each team two games, with a season ending tournament prior to nationals. Nationals consist of the top four teams from each division competing for the national winner. This past year’s representatives from the Southeast division were; Indiana University, Life University, Miami of Ohio University, and the University of Michigan. Michigan will move to the central division this next season. All four teams ended up as the four semifinal teams, with Life University winning the tournament. If we have a DIII team, they will operate as an independent team this season.
